  • Homomorphic encryption (computes on encrypted data)

  • Synthetic data generation (uses artificial data with similar statistical properties)

An AI Impact Assessment (AIIA) is a structured approach to identify and mitigate ethical, legal, and societal risks posed by AI systems. It's not just about checking boxes—it’s about embedding responsibility into the development lifecycle.

A robust AIIA:


  • Evaluates impacts on human rights and fairness

  • Tests for bias, explainability, and robustness

  • Informs design and deployment decisions

  • Supports transparency and public trust


Tools and Frameworks for AIIA


  • EU AI Act: Provides risk-based categorization and mandatory assessment for high-risk AI.

  • OECD AI Principles: Promote human-centric, transparent, and robust AI.

  • Canadian Algorithmic Impact Assessment (AIA): A structured questionnaire used by government agencies.

  • NIST AI Risk Management Framework: Provides a comprehensive set of practices for managing AI risk.


As AI regulations mature globally (e.g., the EU AI Act), impact assessments will become not just best practice—but mandatory.


AI’s Influence on Global Trade and Economic Policy
